Ilyos

“You’ll wear out the citadel if you keep doing that.” Vardas leans next to the bars of my cell deep below the engines.

I don’t stop pacing. This far away from Zoe could be light years. I can still scent her, still taste her, but it’s not enough.

I want her.

Vardas gets a grudging grunt of acknowledgment as I pass him. He sniggers, and I want to kill him, but he dodges my clumsy attempt to put an arm through the bars and the forcefield containing me. It burns like a grakker, but it makes me feel better.

“Do you think I care?” I grumble, returning to my pacing.

“Why did you come back, Ilyos?” Vardas resumes his lean. “You knew Taborr would want to make an example out of you over anyone else.”

“I came back because, despite what my brother wants to believe, and I know you don’t believe, I am not a traitor. I didn’t help Draco take your grakking quantum drive, and I never helped the Liderc, now or before.”

Vardas sighs. “I believe you, Ilyos. I shouldn’t because you’ve always been chaos, but even so, you are no traitor.” He leans back and stares up at the ceiling. “The thing is, you don’t do yourself any favors. Trouble follows you, you’re never consistent, you never back him up, and you do your own thing, which usually involves destruction. You are the very antithesis of a Remek warrior, let alone a Remek lord.”

“I refer you to my previous answer.” I don’t even look at Vardas, instead concentrating on my feet as I walk and walk, trying to work my way through all the things in my head which Zoe could cut through in a second.

“You should care. If you have a mate, if you have your ekko,” Vardas rumbles, and there’s some danger in his voice, “you should want to be the best warrior you can be, for her.”

I come to a standstill. “You know nothing about me, Vardas,” I snarl.

“I know enough,” he returns. “I know that when it was your time to be a warrior, to save me, you did it without thinking. I know you suffered under the Liderc like I did, only your torture was in here.” He taps at the side of his head and then shakes it. “Maybe worse than mine. The loss of an eye is nothing, but the loss of who you are—that is everything.”

I snort and pace past him.

“I mean it, Ilyos. I know who you are. I know who you could be. Does your mate not deserve the real you too?”

I whirl around, but the grakker has already gone, disappearing like the smoke from a Sarkarnii.

In his place is Taborr, scowling as if his life depends on it.

“I am not a traitor, brother. I came back to warn you about the latest Liderc threat, which you will know if you interrogate the Foumon I brought back with me.”

Taborr glares at me, eyes bordering on red.

“I already got the information out of him, but I’m sure you can get it too,” I add.
